New mom Camilla was living the idyllic life with her husband, Luke, and their baby girl. Until one morning, Luke isn’t at home, and in his place is a cryptic note. And then the police show up to tell her that Luke has taken three people hostage in a warehouse in London. By the end of the day, the hostages will be dead, Luke is missing, and all Cam is left with is a one-word sentence in a vague note.
I thought this book was super engaging. However, despite it being marketed as a thriller, I didn’t think it was very suspenseful or thrilling. Instead, it’s more of a study about marriage and secrets and introspection. There is a mystery, though, as we are left wondering the entire book about what exactly led up to Luke taking those people hostage.
The first part of the book occurs on the day when Luke takes the people hostage. There is then a seven-year time skip. We meet Cam again, who, after hearing nothing from Luke in the past seven years and believing him deceased, is wavering on having Luke formally declared dead so that she can move on with her life. She starts thinking more about Luke and tries to figure out what actually happened that day.
I thought Cam was a flawed but relatable character. She always believed there was another explanation for Luke’s actions, and she never really believed he was dead. She continued to love him even though he may have been a criminal. It made me think about how we always want to think the best of our loved ones. She continued to pay his phone bill and keep his phone on so that she could text him and call, and listen to his voice on the voicemail.
We also get the point of view from the hostage negotiator who has never been able to forget the incident, as he feels he failed because he was unable to negotiate with Luke. I thought his point of view was interesting. He can’t let go of the mystery of what happened and is determined to atone for his mistakes.
This book was a quick and engaging read and I liked it!
