FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd first met 6 years ago when they were in the same training class at Quantico. The rivals thought they would never see each other again after going their separate ways after graduating. However, when they both find themselves working in the same city and assigned to the same undercover operation, the rivals must work as partners in order to solve their case and catch the bad guy.
The Thing About Love is the 7th novel in Julie James’s FBI/US Attorney series. I have to say, I love this series. All of the heroines are smart and have jobs that they love and are good at. Similarly, the heroes also have jobs that they are good at and recognize that the heroines are competent and don’t need to be saved. While it’s the 7th in the series, this book can be read as a standalone. Characters from the previous books make a couple of cameos but you don’t need to know the background of anyone to understand the main characters here.
Jessica and John are likable characters. While the book starts out when they meet each other again 6 years after seeing one another, there is a part of the book where each character explains what was going on when they first met at training – sort of a he said/he said. It was amusing to read what each other was thinking about the other. Of course, their rivalry is based on mixed signals and miscommunication.
If you haven’t guessed, this book is an enemies to lovers story. It is full of witty banter and humor and I found myself laughing out loud at multiple parts of the book.
