My laptop started malfunctioning a couple of weeks ago. It wouldn’t log me on because it was unable to find my user profile and I was unable to start the laptop in safe mode. After having a substantial freak out because let’s face it, my life is on my laptop (all my writing and pictures and personal info, which I can’t even imagine losing (no, I have not backed up my computer in while)), I found a computer repair place in Capital Hill and dropped off my laptop to hopefully be repaired.
It was super weird not having access to a computer at home. I didn’t really know what to do with myself. Usually, I come home from work and log on in at some point in the evening and am online until I go to sleep. But I couldn’t do that now. Luckily I could at least answer any emails on my phone so I didn’t have 500 emails to go through when I got my computer back.
But what would I do in all that other time? Sit and stare at the wall? How would I ever watch television when I didn’t have my laptop in front of me to distract me when my mind wandered from whatever show was on?
Well, I read a lot. I finally finished reading a book that I had been slogging through. I was determined to finish it, and not just because it was already 2 weeks late back to the library. I cleaned my apartment a bit and basically did some things that I had been putting off.
It was nice. I feel like sometimes we are a slave to the internet and our computers.
Truthfully, it was kind of pleasant not to have to worry about my laptop. I didn’t think about not logging on because I had nothing to log on to. Sometimes I feel like I used to do so much more stuff before the internet was invented and started consuming all my time (I guess that tells you how old I am).
I did start to get a little nervous around 2:30 on Saturday. I had been told my computer would be ready to be picked up on either Friday or Saturday. Friday had passed with no phone call and Saturday was quickly dying. I knew the repair shop was closed on Sunday so I was counting on having my laptop back and being able to catch up on everything internet related on Sunday.
But it wasn’t looking too good. I knew I could go a few weekdays without my computer because I’ve done that before when I didn’t have internet after a move but could I go the whole weekend?
Luckily I didn’t have to test that theory because the shop called me and I was able to retrieve my laptop before they closed on Saturday.
It was some nice downtime but I was glad to have my laptop (and my life) back.
