Becoming is a memoir written by former first lady Michelle Obama that takes us from her childhood in Chicago, to her schooling at Princeton and Harvard Law School, to meeting and marrying Barack, and to her years at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It is a deeply heartfelt and personal work, one that I liked very much.
I didn’t think I could admire Michelle Obama any more than I did, but after reading this book I think that she is a huge inspiration and full of life and wisdom. It’s not hard to see why the Obamas are the most admired people in America today.
Part of what I liked most about this book is the writing style. I think Michelle Obama is a fantastic writer. The way she writes is as if she were just sitting down next to you, telling a story. And none of her stories are wasted! There were times in the book where she would tell an anecdote about something from her childhood or a person she knew, and then 4 chapters later she would circle back to that story from 50 pages ago and tell you how everything meshed together.
The book is divided into three sections. The first part of the book, titled Becoming Me, covers Michelle’s experiences growing up on the South Side of Chicago and her years at college and law school. The second part, titled Becoming Us, tells of her romance and marriage to Barack and their life together through the early years of his political career. The third section, titled Becoming More, tells about the Obama’s years in the White House and what followed.
Michelle Obama writes candidly about her struggles being a politician’s wife. She writes about how she learned to balance that along with being a career woman and a mom. She talks a lot about many things I did not know about the Obamas and their life, things that showed just how down to earth and human they are, things that reminded me how much a fan I am of Michelle and Barack Obama.
Just go ahead and add me to the millions of people who love Michelle Obama.
I really want to read this! It was in my list but now Summer is getting away from me
It’s a great read and worth it!
