Are you on Instagram? Do you follow #bookstagram?
What is #bookstagram, you ask? #Bookstagram is an Instagram hashtag used to indicate a book-related picture/post. It’s a way for the book-loving community to find each other all over the world and to talk about books.
#Bookstagram can be used to recommend books to other readers and to start a conversation about what books you are reading. Many booksellers and publishers use it to promote upcoming books.
From what I’ve seen on Instagram, a #bookstagram post can pretty much be anything. It just has to convey an individual’s love of books and reading. There’s no right or wrong way to #bookstagram.
A post can be a book or a book cover or objects that symbolize something from the book, such as characters or the plot. It can be taken in your living room, kitchen, bed, or outside your home in a coffee shop or bookstore. People take pictures when they’re on vacation or at the beach or on an airplane.
The #bookstagram post can range from a basic picture of a book on a table or in someone’s hand, to complicated arrangements filled with multiple props and objects. Some of the more intricate ones look like they can take a whole day to set up the scene.
Personally, I prefer the more simple photos and will always like a picture of a cup of coffee and a book. I tend to like the pictures that feel authentic and genuine, like the poster quickly stopped to take a picture while they were having their morning cup of coffee. I usually don’t care much for the photos that look too staged or filled with props.
That being said, I can definitely see how someone might go into debt buying props for their #bookstagrams. From browsing #bookstagram, it seems like, at a minimum, you need to have the following props:
-
- twinkle lights
- coffee
- tea
- candles
- glasses (bonus points if they are reading glasses)
- flowers
- more books
- pages from books
- books shelved backward on bookshelves
- typewriter
- fuzzy blankets/sheets
- fun socks
- season-appropriate props such as leaves, holiday props, snow
- flowers
If you’re looking to add to your TBR pile or just want to find people who love books as much as you, you can’t go wrong with #bookstagram.
