Fixie Farr is the fixer in her family, always taking up the slack for her deadbeat siblings and helping to run her family’s store since the death of their father. When she saves a stranger’s laptop from disaster at a cafe, he scribbles an IOU on a coffee sleeve. Fixie forgets about the IOU until an old friend reappears in need of help. She sets out to help her friend while juggling family issues, business woes, and a suddenly complicated love life.
I was a little hesitant to pick up this book, considering how much I disliked the previous Sophie Kinsella book I had read. However, I hoped that was a bit of an abnormality so I put this one on my list to check out from the library. I’m glad I did because I found this book to be a cute and enjoyable read.
I especially liked the employees that worked at Fixie’s family store. They were such an entertaining group of people and I liked all the scenes they were in. This book really is about family and all the different people that make up your family.
However, I didn’t like the character of Fixie so much at the beginning. She was such a wet blanket and pushover and I found her to be incredibly naive at times. Everyone walks all over her and I kept wanting to roll my eyes and yell at her. Still, Fixie does have her transformation and stands up for herself and I found myself rooting for her by the end of the book.
Fixie’s siblings? I wasn’t rooting for. I’m not quite sure that the siblings’ redemptions were believable. Are we supposed to believe that Fixie yells at them and all of sudden they change their thoughts and behaviors? I could definitely see the brother changing more because he seemed to hit rock bottom and so he kind of had to change his behavior. But not the sister.
In fact, I kept trying to envision who Fixie’s sister reminds me of and it finally came to me – she reminds me of the sister from the movie Sixteen Candles. She was a bit of an airhead and superficial and clearly skated by on her looks.
In all, I liked this book. I thought it was sweet, albeit a little predictable. I really liked the ending and thought it was a great finish to an entertaining book.
I’ll absolutely pick up the next book by Sophie Kinsella.
