Nine years ago, six friends spent a week in the French countryside. There they met Severine, the French girl who lived next door. But at the end of their trip, Severine disappeared. Now, ten years later, her body has been found and the police are asking questions again. The friends, now mostly estranged, will have to come together to figure out what really happened on that vacation.
The book is told from the point of view of Kate. Kate is struggling to get her legal recruiting business off the ground and the discovery of Severine’s body has the potential to destroy her career as she comes under suspicion for murder. Kate is a bit of a goody-two-shoes who finds herself being haunted by visions of Severine. Although I liked the character of Kate, I did have to question some of her actions. Plus, I found it a bit annoying that she seemed to be hung up on Seb, her old boyfriend that broke up with her at the end of that fateful summer vacation.
What I liked about this book was that the author was able to cast doubt on all the characters. All of Kate’s friends are super shifty and it’s clear each one is hiding some sort of secret. The friendships are complicated and I think I suspected all of them at least once during the novel of killing and disposing of Severine’s body.
Maybe it’s because I’ve watched so much Law & Order or Criminal Minds but I just don’t understand people who think they can keep a secret from the police – if tv has taught me anything, it’s that the police always find out. I couldn’t understand why Kate didn’t tell the police everything that happened during that vacation, especially when she became a suspect.
The ending of this book left me with a couple of questions. It felt like the story wrapped up fairly quickly and I was a bit underwhelmed with the motive behind why and how Severine was killed. Plus, kind of a spoiler here, but one of the characters is given enough Rohypnol to make her unconscious for 2 days, but still manages to remember enough of the night to give a lead to the police.
I liked this book. I enjoyed the mystery and the happy ending made me smile.
