Merry Ex-Mas takes place in the fictional city of Icicle Falls, Washington during the weeks leading up to Christmas and follows 3 women who are all dealing with their ex-husbands. Cass’s daughter is getting married and who does she want to walk her down the aisle? Her absentee father. Not only that, but he and his young and beautiful wife will be staying at Cass’s house for the wedding. Ella is stuck living in the same house as her ex-husband while they wait for the house to sell. Ella is convinced he cheated on her, but what should she do when he swears he didn’t? And Charley hasn’t seen her ex-husband since he took her money and ran off with the woman he was having an affair with. But now he’s back in town, looking for a second chance.
This book was lent to me by a friend who, when she heard I was looking for holiday reads, generously offered it to me. I thought this was an enchanting story about love, heartbreak, and second chances.
The story is told in the third person and alternates from character to character. The book is a bit on the shorter end, less than 300 pages, but we still manage to get a lot of time with each couple (or ex-couple). I would have liked to see more of Cass’s relationship with her ex-husband. I felt like by the time he finally appeared on the page, they had a couple of angry snips at each other and then they apologized and it was all fine. She was harboring some serious resentment and I was a little skeptical that everything got resolved after having one nightcap together.
This book is like a big cup of hot chocolate. It was delectable and pleasing and was exactly what I was looking for on a cold December day. The city of Icicle Falls has a small-town feel where everyone knows each other and everyone looks out for one another. Cass, Charley, and Ella are part of a great group of friends who always know when to show up with wine and chocolates. I quite enjoyed the friendships between these ladies.
I didn’t realize this book is part of a series of books that take place in Icicle Falls. I had no trouble following the characters and you don’t need to read any of the other books to know who the side characters or other people in the town are. I read this book in one sitting and found myself smiling at all the cute parts and wanting to yell at characters when they were being stupid – I’m talking about you, bridezilla daughter who thinks they can plan a lavish wedding in 3 weeks.
Overall, this was a fun holiday read.
