what I’m reading: the last flight by julie clark.

Two strangers meet at an airport under troubling circumstances. Claire is trying to leave her abusive and powerful husband. Eva is looking to escape some unpleasant situations in her life. The two women make the decision to help each other out and switch tickets. Claire will take Eva’s flight to Oakland and Eva will take Claire’s flight to Puerto Rico, giving each woman the advantage of no one knowing where they are. But when Claire lands in Oakland, she discovers that the Puerto Rico flight has crashed. Claire realizes that as she soon will be declared “dead”, she can start a new life and assume Eva’s identity. But Eva had a lot of secrets, and these secrets may unravel everything.

I enjoyed this book a lot and I was hooked from the beginning. I thought it had a great premise and I was eager to see where the story would go.

Eva and Claire’s stories are weaved together in the book. We get Claire’s point of view in the present time, as she is trying to figure out what to do after she lands in Oakland and Eva’s point of view in the past through the six months leading up to the plane crash. I really liked the way that Eva’s story unfolded through the pages. She is a bit of a mystery and we know she is looking to escape something in her life, but we’re not sure what it is and all we know is that she lied to Claire. It kept me guessing until the very end as to what actually led Eva to the airport and to Claire.

There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns and definitely a lot of cliff hangers. I felt like almost all of Claire’s chapters ended in a cliff hanger. I do admit that I probably enjoyed Claire’s chapters more than Eva’s as it felt like there was more urgency and tension because you didn’t know if that would be the moment when Claire’s husband found her.

I enjoyed all the characters, including the secondary characters. I thought everyone was well-rounded and although Eva had her flaws, I was rooting for both her and Claire. I thought they were believable characters and I was anxious to see what would happen to them.

This was a page-turner for me and I probably would have read it in one day if I didn’t have to go to sleep. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump and it was great to finally find a book that I kept wanting to read.
