Eve, Susie, Justin, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Eve has been in love with Ed for almost the same time. Now in their 30s, the four regularly meet up for trivia night and mini-vacations. But then tragedy happens one night which changes their lives. Secrets are revealed and Eve starts to wonder how well she really knows her friends.
I thought I knew where this book was going but it went in a completely different direction and that was okay. This book is about friends and grief and loss and coming to terms with friends’ flaws. It took me on a roller coaster of feelings and I felt every emotion that the characters did. I thought their emotions were so genuine and that the author did an amazing job conveying all their reactions.
This book isn’t so much a romance as it is women’s fiction (as much as I cringe while writing that phrase). It really is about friendship. There are cute animals as well as great British humor and witticisms. As an American, I love reading books written by British authors because of all the British expressions. This book is a superb blend of humor and practicality.
I enjoyed the character of Eve and how she changed over the course of the book. I wish that we had learned more about Justin because I thought he was a good friend to Eve and I wanted to learn more about him. All of the characters are compelling but Eve is the main character and the book is mainly about her self-discovery.
Although this is not necessarily a happy book, I still enjoyed it a lot.
