A while back, my friend and I took a trip to the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) to see a costume exhibition. We viewed Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume, an exhibition presented by Walt Disney Archives that consists of over 70 original pieces worn in Disney films and shows.
I had never been to the MoPOP before so I was excited that this exhibit would mark my first trip. I loved looking at all the costumes, especially all the Cinderella dresses from the live-action movies. It was so interesting to see how they looked in person and to see how small and short all these actresses are! I probably would not have been able to fit my arm into most of the dresses let alone wear them to film.
We also saw costumes from Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and A Wrinkle in Time. I was surprised that one of the costumes Julie Andrews wore in the original Mary Poppins was on display and that it still looked brand new!
My favorite villain costumes were Cruella de Vil, Cinderella’s stepsisters, and the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus (sadly my photo of their dresses didn’t turn out well).
There were other costumes from the television show Once Upon a Time and the Maleficent movie, but they didn’t photograph well because of the lighting in the exhibit and the plexiglass barriers. Also, I just realized that all my photos are of dresses worn by women and in case you are wondering, the exhibit does have some costumes worn by men but I didn’t think they were as interesting as all the other ones. All in all, I thought this was a great exhibit with some fun interactive features.
Here’s the website if you want to get tickets. I’m not sure how long the exhibit will be in Seattle but I suspect it will be here until at least 2022.
