Every Christmas Josie writes a letter to her parents, who died on Christmas Eve when she was 9. On her way to mail her letter this year, she accidentally collides with Max while he is getting out of a cab. As an apology for the collision, Josie treats Max to a drink at the local pub which leads to them spending the next three days together. And then Max leaves without saying goodbye. Over the next year, Josie and Max run into each other in unexpected places. Bus as Christmas approaches again, could this be the time that they come together for real?
This book. Never have I wanted to throw a book against the wall as much as this book. I hated the ending of this book because I thought this story was heading in one direction and then it made a 180 and did something completely different. I thought this would be a cute Christmas romance, and it is in a way, but it’s also so much more. Although it begins and ends at Christmastime, there is a lot that happens over the rest of the year.
The characters were all right. Even though the book is told in the third person, I felt that we got so much more insight into Josie and just know more about her. Even during the parts of the book where we are following Max, I still felt a disconnect from him. There were a lot of times where a conversation could have cleared up some misconceptions. Josie and Max were not good at communicating with each other and it was a bit frustrating at times.
I think this is a good book, especially for a debut novel. I did like both Josie and Max’s stories and thought they were both interesting characters. The book is over 400 pages and honestly, I would have read more. The book is very well-written and I think I would have liked it more if it wasn’t shelved in the holiday romance section.
That being said, I was a bit let down by this book.
