Nora Hughes works as an editorial assistant at Parsons Press. She thought it would be the first step towards her dream job in publishing but after working there for 5 years, now she is not so sure. When her pay is cut due to downsizing, Nora is uncertain how she is going to afford her rent, until she decides to take a second job moonlighting for a rival publisher. Things get complicated when she starts interacting with Andrew Santos, a bestselling Parsons author, and Nora is forced to choose who she is committed to – Parsons, Andrew, or herself?
I thought this book would be a cute romance about books and publishing but it was so much more. The book is a bit slow at the beginning as we learn about Nora’s frustrations with her terrible job. But it does pick up and I thought it was quite enjoyable. The book delves into Nora’s depression and disappointment in her situation so it is not necessarily an altogether lighthearted or happy read. But I still liked it.
This is really a book about Nora’s self-discovery and figuring out what to do with her life. I enjoyed the setting and the inside look into the publishing world. I found all the little snippets about publishing to be fascinating. Nora’s situation is not uncommon which is why I found her to be so relatable. I feel that so many people wonder if they are on the right career path or what their dream job is.
Nora’s decision to moonlight for the other publisher was questionable but she felt like it was the only path available to her. I’m not sure that I would have done the same thing if I were in Nora’s shoes. I kept waiting for everything to fall apart and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that it does. I did think there were plenty of other things Nora could have done to help make up the pay cut but I understand that Nora was desperate and sometimes we don’t always do the right thing.
I think this is a great debut novel and I’m excited to read what’s next for this author.
