Former actress turned audiobook narrator Sewanee Chester doesn’t really believe the romance is real in the books she narrates. Although her career began with narrating romance novels, Sewanee has vowed to never record another love story again. But outside circumstances cause her to say yes when she is asked to narrate the last book written by a beloved romance author. Working with her co-narrator Brock McKnight, a super secretive guy with the industry’s sexiest voice, Sewanee starts to think that maybe she could have her own happily ever after.
First off, let me say that I do not listen to audiobooks and chose to read the print version of this book. I have nothing against audiobooks but I find I can’t concentrate as well when I am listening as compared to reading. That being said, I loved the behind-the-scenes look at the life of an audiobook narrator. As the author Julia Whelan is an award-winning audiobook narrator, she’s definitely an authority on the subject and it comes through in this story.
On the one hand, this book is very sad. A horrible accident led to the end of Sewanee’s acting career, her grandmother is in the beginning stages of dementia, her father doesn’t do anything to help, and she finds out the guy she has been developing feelings for has lied to her. But, on the other hand, everything that Sewanee has gone through has turned her into the person she is. The text messages between Sewanee and Brock were so funny and so engaging and the relationship that Sewanee has with her grandmother is lovely.
I have to say, I was rooting for everyone in this book, except maybe Sewanee’s dad. I was invested in these characters and wanted them all to get their happy-ever-afters. There are a lot of secondary characters in this book and I liked every one of them.
This book is full of a number of romance tropes and Sewanee and Brock even make a joke about all of them. The story is a bit reminiscent of You’ve Got Mail, except Brock doesn’t make Sewanee’s bookstore go out of business at the end.
If you like audiobooks and romance novels, you will probably like this book.
