When Zoey Hennessey arrives at the apartment she inherited from her mother, she didn’t realize the building would be inhabited by quirky neighbors as well as three ghosts. Each resident of the building has their own story and secrets and everything feels just a little bit extraordinary. When one of the residents dies just after Zoey arrives, she is thrown into a mystery that is just as curious as the tiny turquoise birds that live in the apartment courtyard.
This book was such a lovely story about the residents of The Dellawisp, a little apartment building named after the birds that inhabit the apartment courtyard. It’s filled with magical realism and whimsical characters that make the story come alive.
This book has one of my favorite tropes which is found family. The residents of The Dellawisp end up coming together and connecting as they let go of their past. Each character’s story unfolds throughout the book in different ways. Some are told from the ghosts that live at The Dellawisp and some are told from the characters, but everyone slowly learns that they have a lot in common and strangers become family.
The writing in this book was so engaging and captivating; it really was a delight to read. I’ve only read one of Sarah Addison Allen’s other books, but now I am thinking I need to read them all!
The only thing that disappointed me about this book is that dellawisps are not real birds. I really wanted to find a picture of them but I imagine they look something like a mountain bluebird or a goldcrest.
