Ess wakes up alone on a sailboat with no memory of who she is. The only clue to her past is a note that says Don’t make yourself known. Don’t look back. As Ess sets off on a journey looking for clues to her former life she discovers that she may be the cause of her memory loss, but why would she wipe her own memory? And why does it feel like someone is always watching her?
This book is from my recent library book haul. I’m not sure where I heard about this book but it’s a recent release – it was published in May of this year. I wish there was a place to put notes in my library hold list so that I could write down where I hear about or read about books I want to read. Often times I am browsing online or on social media and I find a book I want to read so I just go straight to my library page to put that book on hold or put it in my for later queue. But that’s a whole discussion for another day.
This book takes place in 2038 and I loved reading all the little nods to the future. The world is in the midst of a climate crisis with dangerous storms, floods, fires, and other natural disasters occurring almost every day. I wasn’t expecting climate change to play such a large role in this book.
I thought this book would be more of an action thriller than a psychological one but I realized it’s more of a mystery. Ess sets out on a course to figure out who she is and why her memory was wiped. It’s a pretty slow burn but if you’re into sailing or reading about sailing, parts of this book will be really intriguing.
I thought this was an interesting book but I would have liked more action.
