For over 20 years Amber Glass has been known as “Prom Mom”, the girl who allegedly killed her baby on the night of the prom after her date ditched her. Even after she moved away from her hometown of Baltimore, Amber’s past is just one Google search away. But now Amber has returned to the city hoping she can have a second chance, but it isn’t long before she runs into Joe Simpson, her date from that disastrous night. Amber knows she should stay away from Joe, but she can’t.
I wasn’t blown away by this book. I think part of the reason was that I didn’t know where this book was going – Is it a mystery? Is it a revenge story? Is there a redemption arc? I also thought the plot was a bit boring at times; not a lot happens in the book.
The book takes place in the present time (2020/2021) with flashbacks to the night of prom. The second half of the book does have a lot of emphasis on Covid and U.S. politics at the time. I’ve said this before but I don’t find plotlines that revolve around Covid to be especially compelling and I didn’t think that plotline added much to the story.
I also didn’t like any of the characters. I couldn’t tell if the readers were supposed to like Amber and if she was supposed to be a sympathetic character. Honestly, I don’t think any of the people in this book are supposed to be likable which is a shame because sometimes it’s difficult to keep reading when you have no one to root for.
This is another book advertised as a suspenseful thriller that I thought was neither suspenseful nor thrilling. I feel like I’m a bit of an outlier here since I’ve read a lot of great reviews for this book, but I just thought it was okay.
