It’s that time of year when it stays light out past 9pm, and it just wrecks my schedule. Like, how am I supposed to be eating dinner when it’s so light out? Or I’m just hanging out, watching television, and then all of a sudden it’s 9:30 and I need to start getting ready to go to sleep. I like the long days, but sometimes they mess everything up.
Work continues to be hectic and, at first, when I sat down to write this post, I didn’t think I would have anything to write about. But as I started typing, more and more things came to mind of what I did last month.
Here is my monthly wrap-up of some of the other things I was up to in May.
Watching Netflix:
The Eternaut – I watched this Argentine science fiction show about a group of people who survive a deadly snowstorm only to find out that it was caused by aliens. I don’t mind watching shows in other languages that have subtitles, but I find myself getting so caught up reading the subtitles that I don’t pay attention to the action on the screen. So I was excited to find out this show was dubbed and that I could give all my attention to the actors.
This show was super exciting. There are six episodes, and I think I watched them in two days. It definitely set itself up for another season, so I really hope it returns and doesn’t get cancelled. Honestly, I was not expecting aliens (I hope this is not a spoiler for anyone since the show is based on a comic book and the first paragraph in the Wikipedia entry mentions aliens), so that was a surprise twist for me. There is a scene in the last episode that I found super creepy, but other than that, I really liked the show. I liked the way everyone banded together and how they were able to improvise the coverings that made it possible to go outside in the snow.
Dept. Q – I just started watching this show, and I’m totally into it already. Dept. Q is a crime thriller series based on a series of books. It stars Matthew Goode as a detective who heads a cold case unit and investigates a woman who disappeared a few years ago. The show is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, so I do have to confess that I don’t always understand what everyone is saying because of their accents. But I still get the gist of it! I haven’t finished this one yet, since it just came out a couple of weeks ago, but I am watching an episode every few days.
All the book stuff:
Silent reading in Edmonds – my friends and I went to a silent reading club in Edmonds. It meets every third Wednesday of the month at Leftcraft in downtown Edmonds. We met up, ordered some dinner from the restaurant, and then at 7:30 it got real quiet and everyone started reading. It was so much fun to see all the other readers in the same space, reading their books. There were people reading hardback books, paperback books, and e-readers. I saw more than one person reading the same book, and I also saw people reading books I’ve read in the past. At the end of the night, everyone put their books on a table so that they could take a book selfie with all the books. I will definitely be back to Leftcraft this month for silent reading.
My book club – I am loving my new book club. Yes, there are only three of us in the group, but that doesn’t matter because we all love talking about books. We met again at the end of May and it was a lot of fun. We actually talk about the book we read! We probably spent over an hour talking about the book – I may have been overprepared and came with pages of notes but no one seemed to mind (hopefully!).
Fun day trips:
Bainbridge Island – I had to go into downtown Seattle on a weekend day, so I decided to take advantage of being downtown to take a trip on the ferry to Bainbridge. I wanted to walk around and also grab a coffee with my friend who lives on the island. I stopped at the bookstore, the yarn store, this cute fabric store, and of course, the candy store. It was quite a day.
Coupeville – Over Memorial Day weekend, my friend and I took a day trip to Coupeville, WA. I had never been there before so this was a new experience for me! Coupeville is on Whidbey Island, and I’ve never been to Whidbey Island before either so that was also new. Coupeville is where Practical Magic was filmed so we got to see some of the stores from the movie. Unfortunately, the house from Practical Magic is not a real house so it was not something we could see. The weather was beautiful and just a great day to be next to the water.
See you next month!

Sounds like a good month. Live the book clubs! I’m very interested in Dept Q. I have it on my list of shows to watch.
Thanks! I am enjoying Dept. Q. I love a good crime show!
