This year is flying by. It’s already April, and summer will be here before we know it.
Speaking of the weather, it snowed here on Friday the 13th. Isn’t that day supposed to be lucky? I don’t know; all I know is that I was not prepared when I stepped outside to walk to the bus stop. It snowed all day, little flurries drifting down, with just enough accumulation on the bushes and grass to look pretty, but nothing sticking to the sidewalks or streets. A very bizarre March day.
Here’s what I’ve been up to in March:
Going to the movies:
I went to the actual movie theater (!!) and saw Project Hail Mary. I read the book several years ago and loved it, so I had been waiting (impatiently) for the movie to come out, and it did not disappoint. Yes, there were parts from the book that didn’t make it into the film, but that’s always the case with adaptations.
I thought Ryan Gosling was a great Dr. Ryland Grace, and I loved the interpretation of Rocky, although I do wish we could have heard more of his alien language. The book describes it as sounding like music, and I was so curious how that would translate on screen. I’ve heard it’s done really well in the audiobook, which makes me want to check it out.
The movie wasn’t the only memorable part of the day, though. My theater was packed. There was even a group of teenagers who tried to get me to move from the seat I paid for so they could all sit together. I had my doubts that they actually bought seats next to each other, but regardless, I did not move. I have officially entered my curmudgeonly era and I will not be budged.
Celebrating:
March is my birthday month! My birthday fell on a Saturday this year, so I took Thursday and Friday off beforehand to relax and get a head start on celebrating. My friend Alli and I went thrifting, grabbed lunch, and stopped by Barnes & Noble, a perfect low-key day.
Of course, I also made my rounds for birthday freebies: my free Starbucks drink and (most importantly) free guacamole at Chipotle. Priorities. I also stopped by my local yarn store, which offers a birthday discount, and treated myself to some yarn I had been coveting.
All in all, a pretty perfect way to celebrate another trip around the sun.
Riding the light rail:
The new cross-lake light rail connection, linking the Eastside suburbs to downtown Seattle and beyond, finally opened this month, and I couldn’t be happier. You can now ride all the way from the Eastside into downtown Seattle (and even further north).
Naturally, I had the brilliant idea to ride it on opening day, which, in hindsight, was a mistake. It was packed shoulder to shoulder, with people waiting at stations unable to even squeeze on. To be fair, I actually had somewhere to go, so I like to think my trip was justified. And honestly, it is a really nice ride, especially going across the lake.
Hot Chocolate 5k:
I almost forgot about the Hot Chocolate 5K because I “ran” (read: walked) it on March 1st. This is one of my favorite races to do, mostly because the swag and post-race treats are top-tier.
You get a zip-up jacket with the race logo, though “jacket” might be generous this year. It leaned more windbreaker than cozy pullover, which was a bit disappointing. But the real highlight is at the finish line: a medal and a tray of treats, including hot chocolate, melted chocolate for dipping, and goodies like cookies, marshmallows, and pretzels. And of course bananas. Is it even a 5K if you don’t get a banana at the end? I usually do this race with friends, so it’s always a fun excuse to take a three-mile stroll together and reward ourselves with chocolate afterward.
See you next month!
