The past few months for Sybil have not been great. Not only did her fiancé leave her at the altar of their Star Wars themed wedding and run off with her identical twin sister, but she may have made a huge mistake at work that has put her job in jeopardy. Her only comfort has been her dog Basil and knitting hordes of tea cosies, hats, and sweaters, enough to fill all the shelves in her apartment.
Unhappy at being alone for Christmas, Sybil decides to escape for a bit and visit her friend in Tindledale, a quaint, snow-covered, picture-perfect village. There she meets Hettie, proprietor of Hettie’s House of Haberdashery, a store dedicated to knitting and needle craft. The two strike up a friendship over their love of knitting and when Sybil finds out the shop is in danger of closing, she recruits the rest of the town to pitch in and help save the store.
This was a heartwarming story about knitting, friends, kindness, turning your life around, and romancing the town’s hot doctor. I thought this was a charming and delightful book. Along with books about bloggers and writers, books about knitters are my catnip. Perhaps it’s because I can kind of knit and crochet, and I enjoy reading books about people who like doing the same things I do. It made me want to go out to my local yarn shop and buy all the yarn!
There is a big cast of characters. Of course, I loved Basil the dog. The townspeople were all super nice, just what you would expect from inhabitants of a cozy village.
The writing was a bit wordy. The author favors very long, almost run on sentences. Almost every sentence had so much detail and unnecessary padding, it was as if she was cramming to get every bit of detail in as few of sentences. But if wordiness doesn’t bother you, then feel free to completely disregard my opinion.
I do have to confess:
– While typing this up, I just got the joke that Sybil’s ex-boyfriend’s name was Luke and he was obsessed with Star Wars (their wedding was to be on May 4th)
– I still don’t know or understand what a Christmas pudding sweater is (probably because I’m not entirely sure what Christmas pudding is)
To conclude, I really enjoyed this sweet, holiday-themed story.
