Dogs and Christmas – what more could I ask for?? This book is a Hallmark movie just waiting to be made.
Charlie is temporarily homeless after a gas leak in the apartment above hers causes her ceiling to implode. Not only does she have a concussion from where the ceiling fell on her while she was sleeping but she also just found out her boyfriend has been cheating for the past year. Forced to recuperate at her cousin’s house in the country, Charlie just wants to make it through the holiday season. Too bad her cousin operates a doggy daycare. But no one has to know that Charlie isn’t exactly a dog person right?
This is a lovely holiday story. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments as Charlie and the dogs get into all sorts of hijinks. There’s a pregnant dog, a deaf dog, a dog so old he can barely stand, and a pair of twin Malamutes who just want to run and pull a sled. Oh, and that’s just before the alpacas arrived.
Honestly, I wasn’t too fond of Charlie at the beginning. She seemed a bit shallow and only agreed to help out her cousin when she agreed to pay her (even though she was helping Charlie out by letting her stay at her house). I had to question some of Charlie’s decisions, but by the end of the book she had grown on me and I found her a joy to read about.
There’s a nice little romance with the town veterinarian, Cal, that of course starts out with some miscommunication. I did feel that Cal had more backstory that I wished we knew more about.
This was a super quick read – I finished it in one day. If you love dogs, you should read this book.
