Joey Perrone couldn’t believe it when her husband Chaz threw her off a cruise ship on their second anniversary. Luckily Joey used to be a competitive swimmer in college and manages to survive by hanging onto a floating bale of discarded Jamaican marijuana. After she is rescued by former cop Mick Stranahan, Joey chooses not to contact the police to let them know she’s still alive. Instead, she decides to stay dead and, with Mick’s help, enact a little revenge on Chaz while trying to figure out why he tried to kill her.
Skinny Dip was my book club’s latest pick. I’d like to tell you what everyone thought of the book, but only one person finished reading it in time for our meeting so we didn’t really discuss it. I ended up finishing the book a couple of weeks after our meeting. Hopefully, I can read our next book in time!
Set in southern Florida and the Everglades, Skinny Dip is a dark and humorous story. It is filled with a variety of villains and scoundrels that really make the story come to life. My favorite character was Tool, a painkiller-addicted bodyguard who was described as having an unnatural amount of body hair. I always try to picture the characters in my head but I just could not picture this guy. He was described as a hulking mountain of a man covered in dark hair, except for small sections that he would shave off in order to apply stolen pain-relief patches to satisfy his painkiller addiction. I really liked his storyline and would enjoy reading more about what happened to him after the book was finished.
It did take me a long time to read this book. I usually read it in bits and pieces during my lunch. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the book; I thought the characters were okay and the plot was interesting. The book just didn’t hold my attention for long periods of time. I found Joey and her antics to be amusing, but I wasn’t really invested in the outcome.
There is a bit of an environmental aspect to the book concerning the Everglades. I have never been to the Everglades, but honestly, this book does not make me want to go there mainly due to the many descriptions of bugs and other swamp dwellers. So many depictions of bugs!
This book was good, but it just wasn’t really for me. I only read it because of my book club and I’m not sure that I would read more of this author’s books.
