One night, New York City cop Barry Sutton is called to the scene of a woman threatening to commit suicide. She tells him that her life is not her own and that she has memories of things that never happened, a phenomenon known as false memory syndrome. Unable to save the woman, Barry starts investigating other occurrences of false memory syndrome. Helena Smith is a brilliant neuroscientist working with memories and trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. She has dedicated her life to preserving memories and when a mysterious opportunity finds her, she might have a way to make her design come true. As Barry comes closer to finding out the truth, his path crosses with Helena’s and soon, the couple figures out they may be the only two that can save the world.
I didn’t know much about this book going in. I mainly picked it up to read because it is written by Blake Crouch and I found his previous book, Dark Matter, to be so fascinating (read my review here).
I don’t want to say a lot about what this book is about mainly because you can’t really say a lot without giving away the plot. All I can say is that I kept turning the pages, eager to find out what would happen next. Blake Crouch has written another mind-bending story, one that I keep thinking about days after I finished reading it. Seriously, how does he come up with this stuff?
Blake Crouch manages to take a simple thought, “What if everything you remembered was false?” and turn it into 300 pages of action and emotions and family. I was a bit surprised at how emotional parts of this book were and how much of it focused on family. I also wasn’t expecting so much of a love story either, but everything was brought together fabulously to create an addictive and mind-blowing thriller.
If you are looking for a great speculative science fiction novel, look no further than here.
