I’m traveling for the holidays so I made my way to SeaTac early this morning. I wasn’t sure what the security lines would be like so I made sure to give myself plenty of time. Luckily the lines were super short but unluckily my flight has been delayed so now I have some time to waste before my flight.
I know people always complain about traveling during the holiday season but I actually enjoy it. There’s just something about going somewhere or having a destination that makes me smile. I’ve found that you just have to chill out and as long as you’re not having a Home Alone situation, running through the airport, you can get to your destination fairly easily.
I like all kinds of travel. I enjoy going to the airport or taking a train. I even enjoy traveling by car (as long as I am not the one driving). I like walking or traveling by boat. The one thing I don’t like is helicopters!
Things I love to do while traveling:
Get to the airport early. If it’s feasible (or if your flight doesn’t leave at 5am) I love getting to the airport early. I don’t have to worry about checking in on time, getting through security, or running to my gate. Luckily, the only time I’ve ever had to run to my gate was when the airplane I was on was delayed 2 hours and my connecting flight was being held for a few of us. But I made it!
Wander the airport. Getting to the airport early means that you have a lot of time to wander around. I love wandering the airport. Nothing says I’m going on a trip quite like browsing the airport bookstore. And the airport bookstores always have all the magazines! I love magazines! I always bring a bunch of magazines with me when I fly and then when I am finished reading them, I put them in the recycling and then I don’t have to carry them anymore.
Get food at the airport. Look, I know the food is always super expensive at the airport. But I feel like that’s part of the experience. The only time I go to Beecher’s Handmade Cheese is at the airport – there’s another location at Pike Place Market but that place is always super busy. There’s also a Peet’s Coffee at my airport that I always go to. Plus, sitting down and having something to eat at the airport is a fabulous way to people watch.
People watch. An airport is a great place to people watch. SeaTac airport always has carolers walking around during the holiday season as well as Santa Claus riding around in a golf cart. Today I saw a guy dressing up as a toy soldier walking around on stilts. Plus, not people, but I hear there are actual reindeer at the light rail station on specific days around Christmas. There are so many people that pass through the airport. I love trying to guess where they are going or coming from and what their stories are.
Go to the airport lounges. Okay, the truth is that I’ve never been to an airport lounge. But I’ve read all about them and walk by them all the time. They just seem so cozy and convenient. One of these days I’m going to go to an airport lounge and I am going to love it.
