The Last Boyfriend is the second book in the Inn Boonsboro trilogy. Owen Montgomery is the planner in the family. He takes his spreadsheets and checklists very seriously and it’s because of his meticulous planning t
hat the Inn Boonsboro is on track to open on time. What Owen didn’t plan for was his growing feelings for Avery MacTavish. Avery runs the pizza place across the street from the Inn and her and Owen have known each other since they were children. But lately, Owen has started to notice her a bit more than as friends.
I really liked the character of Owen. His brothers make fun of him because he has his schedules and he’s always making lists but I also like scheduling and lists, so of course I had to like him. It seems like nothing could fluster him so I enjoyed seeing him wrestle with his feelings for Avery.
We met Avery in the first book but we didn’t know much about her. She is lively and spunky and is consistently dying her hair a different color red just for the fun of it. She provides a great contrast to Owen and I enjoyed watching the two fall in love.
As for the Inn Boonsboro, we see the finishing touches put on the Inn and the grand opening. Like the previous book, construction plays a big role – there’s a lot of talk of punch outs, which I still don’t understand are, and of loading in furniture. The mystery of the ghost in the Inn and what happened to her is expanded and I can’t wait to find out more in the last book. I have a theory about who she is so I’ll be reading to find out if I’m correct.
Like the previous book, this book contains almost zero angst. There are just a couple of pages where Owen and Avery have a fight because she doesn’t tell him something but then everything is settled fairly quickly. This book was light and easy-going and just a delight to read when I was looking for something to take my mind off everything going on.
