When the Earth began to die, humans came together and built twenty-four spaceships that would be launched in search of a new world to live. Each spaceship carries ten thousand humans, known as the Chosen Ones, who would ensure the continuation of humanity. 500 years after the launch of the ships, Logan, a former military investigator, is awakened early from his cryo-sleep. Thirty Chosen Ones have mysteriously died in their cryo-sleep pods. Logan’s job is to determine if the sleep pods malfunctioned or if there is a serial killer in the fleet that is killing Chosen Ones. Assisting Logan in his investigation is Katia, a British homicide detective, who may have her own agenda involving the dead Chosen Ones. Logan and Katia have to work together to figure out what’s going on before they are the next victims.
I really liked this book. I am finding that I have a love for futuristic stories that take place on spaceships. Of course, I shouldn’t be surprised. I was glued to the television in high school watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. I can’t get enough of all the Star Trek series, especially Voyager (although I was never into the original series with Captain Kirk). Many years ago, a friend introduced me to the remake of Battlestar Galactica and I was hooked. I’m also into the show The Expanse on Amazon. What I’m saying is that spaceships and space and planets are cool and I like reading stories that take place in that world.
This book is first in the Dark Desires Origins series. It takes place roughly 500 years before the beginning of another series called the Dark Desires series. I’m led to believe that the Dark Desires series takes place on the new worlds that humanity is searching for in this book. I haven’t read any of the other books however this origin story drew me in.
That being said, as I have not read the series that comes after this one I was unprepared for the supernatural elements in this book. I suppose I should have guessed since the synopsis on the back of the book states, “It’s not only humans who fled the dying Earth.” Still, I was surprised when a couple of chapters into the book a vampire shows up and then we learn that Katia is a were-cat.
The mystery of who or what was killing the Chosen Ones was intriguing and it kept me reading until the late hours of the night so I could find out. I had my hunch about who the baddie was and I’m glad that I was correct.
There is some insta-lust that turns into love very quickly. The book takes place over the course of about a week or so and Logan and Katia fall madly in love within that time. I’m not sure I believed it but I guess when you’re searching for a killer and you might be next on their list, anything goes.
I thought it was interesting that the supernatural elements are not played up in the book. There were no vampire attacks or vampires feeding on anyone. Although Katia is a were-cat, she only shifts into her cat twice and one time it was because she was poisoned and shifting into her cat saved her life. I kept expecting her to shift into the cat so she could spy on people. Or I was expecting her to have superhuman strength so she could be a great fighter. I would have even accepted a scene where she and Logan go to sleep and he wakes up cuddling a cat because she shifted into a cat in the middle of the night. Perhaps the other books will have more of the supernatural variety but I felt this one was very slim.
I liked this space and fantasy book. It set the tone for an entertaining series.
