You ever notice how book covers go through phases where several books will be published with similar cover designs? You’ll be looking at a cover and think to yourself “I’ve seen this before.” Like, after 50 Shades of Grey was published, book covers with a greyscale background and a single object such as cufflinks or a mask were everywhere. I’ve also noticed recently many romance and rom-com books that all have cartoonish covers with hand lettering.
But I want to talk about another book cover trend I’ve observed lately.
I noticed that there are a lot of books being published about World War II that all have similar covers. All the covers have one or more women on them and the women are all facing away from the reader.
I saw this cover trend on a couple of books, which lead me down a rabbit hole where I looked up books set during World War II to see how many had women on the cover and if they did, were they facing away. I found a lot!
I am so curious as to how this trend got started and what do the women facing away from the reader mean?? See below for just some of the books I saw with this cover trend.
