What a weird year this has been. I keep hearing people talk about how much they read this year because they were stuck inside and couldn’t do anything. But I feel like I had the opposite reaction. It’s been difficult for me to sit down and read. I think part of it is because I’ve been working from home for the past 9 months and I can only stare at the same things in my apartment for so long. Similarly, in an effort to change up my surroundings, I started taking long walks in the evenings and on the weekend which also ate into my reading time.
But I have managed to read 41 books so far this year. As I’ve said before, I track my reading on Goodreads. It’s always fun to look back on books I’ve read during the year. There’s always at least one book that I’ve completely forgotten the plot of or a book that I find myself thinking, I can’t believe I read that book this year. I also rate the books I’ve read on a scale of one to five stars.
I only had one 5-star book this year:
Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber
I loved this book about a woman who moves back home to run her grandmother’s cafe. There’s love, family, and magical realism. Read my review here.
Here are some other 4-star books that I really liked:
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
This is another book that is filled with magical realism. I loved all the discussions of food and magic and of course, the enchanted apple tree. Read my review here.
The Witness by Nora Roberts
The Witness is an example of why Nora Roberts is such a beloved author. It’s a romantic suspense with great characters and a great ending. Plus it has one of the best first lines I’ve read in a long time.
Burn For Me by Ilona Andrews
Burn For Me is the first book in a fantasy romance series. I’ve read three books in the series and Burn For Me is my favorite so far. I love the world that it takes place in as well as all the characters. Read my review here.
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
If you are a fan of twists and turns and crazy-sauce plotlines, this book is for you. I felt like each chapter brought a new explanation of what happened to the missing baby. It felt like I was reading a Lifetime movie. Read my review here.
