The family detective agency ran by Nevada Baylor has just been given a new assignment – bring in dangerous suspect Adam Pierce. Nevada knows this is an impossible task as Adam Pierce is a Prime – the most powerful and highest rank of magic-user. If Nevada fails to bring in Adam, the company that holds the mortgage on her family business will call in the loan and the business will be liquidated. More trouble occurs when Nevada is kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan, another Prime who is looking for Adam Pierce for his own reasons. Realizing they have a better chance of finding Adam together, Nevada and Rogan join forces.
Burn for Me is the first book in the Hidden Legacy series. The series takes place in a world where a few hundred years ago a serum was discovered that awakened magical abilities in humans. The serum was destroyed but the magical gifts continue to be passed along genetically. Now, many years later, the most powerful of magic families are known as Houses and these Houses will go to any length to keep their bloodlines and magic intact.
I really liked this book. It took me a bit to understand and figure out the world that Nevada lives in but once I did, the story drew me in. The magic was interesting as it seemed like every character had a different type of magic and could wield their magic distinctly. I also wasn’t sure who the hero was in the beginning. Was it Adam Pierce or Mad Rogan? Both guys are persuasive and suave and I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to be rooting for.
The characters in the book are great. Nevada is feisty and can definitely hold her own. She lives in a converted warehouse with her mother, grandmother, two teenage sisters, and two cousins. Nevada’s grandmother is hilarious – I laughed at so many of her antics. Everyone in the family works for the detective agency in some capacity and I thought the sense of family in this book was lovely. Even though they may have arguments, you can tell that everyone really loves each other.
There’s not a lot of romance in this book. What there is, is a lot of sexual tension between Nevada and Rogan (and some between Nevada and Adam Pierce but that gets shut down fairly quickly). Nevada thinks that because Rogan is super powerful and comes from an influential House, that he would want nothing to do with her as her magic is not as impressive. These two had some great banter together and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
This book is a fantastic start to a new series.
