It’s the day after Christmas and Maelyn Jones is in the car with her family, traveling to the airport. They just spent their annual Christmas vacation at a cabin in Utah with friends of their family. Mae is in a wistful mood as she just learned this will be her last year at the cabin because the owners are selling it. Added to that is that she kind of kissed her crush’s brother last night. Mae just wants to erase the past few days and finds her wish granted when her family gets in a car accident and all of a sudden Mae is thrown 6 days back in time, to the beginning of her holiday trip.
I can’t tell if I liked this book. It’s sort of a Groundhog Day-style of book, where Mae gets stuck in a time loop after making a wish to the universe to show her what will make her happy.
My biggest issue is that the time loop only happened a few times. Mae only really relives the whole week leading up to Christmas once. I thought the time loop would have been more interesting and I wanted to see her relive the days multiple times and have her try different things each day. I guess I was expecting more shenanigans and funny things to happen.
I did like the way that the time loop made Mae realize how miserable she was in her current job and her life. I liked the way that she decided to be honest about her wants and desires. She decides that since she’s going to live the day over again, she might as well do what she wants. I suppose it’s a good thing that everything works out since she only relives the vacation once.
I thought the romance was just meh. Mae has been in love with Andrew for 13 years. But we don’t really know why, all we know is that one day when she was 13 she noticed Andrew was a “man” (he was 16) which began her crush. And then we never find out why Andrew fell in love with Mae – has he always been in love with her, did he see her differently after she confessed her feelings? We don’t know. It kind of just felt too easy. Honestly, up until the last few pages, I kept expecting Mae to end up with Andrew’s brother. Plus, the way that Andrew acted when he found out Mae kissed his brother in the original timeline was irritating.
The ending was cute but I found it to be just a little too cute.
