Summer is almost here. It’s not my favorite season but I am getting excited for those super long days. Here is my monthly wrap-up of some of the things I’ve watched, eaten or drank, or just loved for the month of May.
What I’m watching:
Last month I told you about the documentary Made You Look, about art fraud. Well, I am continuing the art theme because this month I watched This is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist on Netflix. It’s a documentary about the 1990 robbery of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. 13 pieces worth hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen and still have not been recovered. The documentary is a four-part series and I would recommend you check it out. You don’t have to be into art to find it fascinating.
What I’m eating:
You know the lemon loaf at Starbucks? Well, I’ve been dying to try to make my own. One day when I was at the grocery store perusing the baking aisle, I saw a box mix for lemon pound cake and I knew I had to try it. You know your loaf cake is going to be good when it’s a box mix that requires over half a cup of butter right? It turned out pretty good and the mix even came with a lemony glaze to spread over the top of the loaf, just like Starbucks. The only thing is that the recipe called for an 8×4 inch loaf pan to bake it in and I didn’t have that. I only have a 9×5 pan so my loaf cake was a little flat. It definitely did not look like the lemon loaf from Starbucks but it sure tasted like it. The box mix was from Krusteaz and you can find it on their website here.
What I’m loving:
I read this article in the Smithsonian Magazine about the history of the Cheez-It. It was super interesting. Did you know the Cheez-It turns 100 this year and was first baked in Dayton, Ohio? Also, apparently, Cheez-Its have an 11-month shelf life. I’m not sure how this shelf life was discovered since I don’t know anyone whose Cheez-Its last for one month, let alone eleven months. The article talks about the history of the baked cracker and how it was created and what it was marketed as before everyone knew what a Cheez-It was. It’s a great read for Cheez-Its lovers.
