Event planner Kate Sweet is known as the Queen of Happily Ever Afters due to her awe-inspiring dream weddings. When her friend asks Kate to plan a book launch party for famous horror writer Drake Matthews, she agrees and trades her weddings and fairy tales for coffins and terror. Nicknamed the Knight of Nightmares, Drake just wants to get through the party so he can get back to writing. Horror and happily ever after don’t exactly go together but Kate knows that if she can pull off the party, it might be her ticket to expanding her business.
I thought this book was charming and funny. It has a meet-cute that could only happen in a romantic comedy. The book takes place over the month of October, with the book launch occurring on Halloween, so there are certainly a lot of fall vibes with leaves and pumpkins galore. This would definitely be a fun book to read in the fall.
I liked both of the main characters and I enjoyed reading about each of their professions. There was a bit of insta-love, but it didn’t bother me that much. Kate and Drake worked closely together while planning the party so the build-up to the romance felt real. I didn’t love the ending of the book, mainly because I felt it was too similar to a storyline on a certain television show.
This book is also a fairly quick and easy read. There are some great side characters, including Drake’s two brothers and Kate’s friend Imani. I would have liked to have read more about Imani however I believe she is the star of the next book in the series (along with one of Drake’s brothers) so I guess we will learn more about her then.
There were a couple of things I had questions about, namely, are book launch parties really a thing? Do agents and authors throw elaborate celebrations for books that are not even out yet? Also, Drake is hosting this party at his house and I don’t know of any celebrity who would invite the public to their home for a party. I was also a little disappointed that on the cover of the book, Kate’s character is barefoot considering how much is said about her stiletto heels in the book.
This was a sweet (pun intended) debut and I will be looking for the next book in the series.
