Kara is a romance writer suffering from a bit of writer’s block. The deadline for her next book is coming up fast and Kara has nothing written. But when she comes face to face with her old college boyfriend Ryan at her best friend’s pre-wedding party, sparks fly and Kara is inspired to write up a storm. Now Kara has to figure out how to spend enough time with the infuriating and annoyingly handsome Ryan in order to finish her book, but not enough time that she might fall in love with him again.
This is a second-chance romance between two former college sweethearts who meet again at the wedding of their respective best friends. I adore a second-chance romance; it’s one of my favorite tropes. There’s just something about reading about two people meeting again after a long time apart that I enjoy. People are older and wiser and maybe they have learned something since all that time ago.
There were parts of this book that I liked and parts I didn’t like. I loved the banter between Kara and Ryan. It was easy to see their familiarity with each other and how easy it was for them to slip back into old habits. I found their relationship and chemistry candid and believable.
I didn’t love the way that Ryan treated Kara towards the end of the book and, honestly, I think he got off a bit easy. I really liked this book until about the 75% mark and then it kind of shifted and moved into a different storyline that I didn’t really care for or understand the point of that storyline in the book. It just left me feeling a little like, huh?
The other thing that I had a question about was, there is a scene at the wedding where Kara asks a woman if they need help finding someone because Kara, as the maid of honor, has the seating chart memorized. Which made me wonder – if Kara had the seating chart memorized, how did she not notice that one of the groomsmen was her ex-boyfriend? I mean, she is completely blind-sided when she first sees him, to the point where she drops her champagne glass. Maybe this is explained, but I didn’t see it.
The other thing that I loved about this book is that there is a very cute dog named Duke and he may have been my favorite character.
I read this book at just the right time for me. I was looking for something fun and light-hearted to read, something I could read in a day or so, and this book hit the spot.
