One day, everyone in the world wakes up to find a small wooden box on their doorstep. Inside the box is a string whose length shows the exact number of years they will live.
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it was incredibly thought-provoking and made me wonder what I would do if in this situation. Would I look at my string? Would I change mylife if I had a short string? Would I treat people differently based on their string lengths?
On the other hand, I thought the book was kind of boring. It’s very character-focused, and we follow eight different characters throughout the book. The book kind of just meanders through their lives. It felt like it was missing something and I don’t know if that was action or some big revelation but I didn’t really connect or feel anything for any of the characters.
I was left with many questions at the end, which I guess is what the author wanted? Like, why do the strings only arrive for people 22 years of age or older? Where do the strings come from? This is my biggest question and I think if the author answered that, either by telling us it was magic or a higher power or science fiction, I think this book would have been a lot better.
This book was good, but I guess I was hoping for something with more twists and action.
