Karissa Newcomb has just moved into a new neighborhood after going through a divorce. She becomes friends with her new neighbors, Alice and Margot, and the friends decide to start a book club along with Alice’s sister Josie. All of the ladies are in need of a refresh – Karissa is starting over after her divorce, Alice is grieving her late husband and hasn’t been able to drive after an almost accident soon after his death, Margot has lost her job and is having trouble finding a new one, and Josie has her own family problems to deal with. Hopefully the book club will be just the thing to help the friends build their best lives ever.
This book didn’t really work for me. I know that it’s a romance/chick lit and that, a lot of times, we have to recognize that not everything will be realistic but I just found everything to be wildly far-fetched. Karissa and her super hot boss fall in love, despite them having hardly any substantial interactions. Margot, who has lost her job, decides to develop an app and surprise surprise, the guy she hires to create the app is also super hot and even though she has no experience with apps she creates a wildly successful app and also falls in love with the guy. All of the ladies in the book club write a book together and it immediately gets picked up by Karissa’s publisher employer and published (despite it, in my opinion, not being very good based on the couple of paragraphs that we are given).
I thought that Karissa had no personality and was really underdeveloped. All we know about her is that she got divorced from her husband because he fell in love with her gorgeous best friend who was their neighbor and now she has really low self-esteem because she’s not as pretty as the neighbor. She falls in love with her boss for some reason – he also has no personality and I couldn’t tell you anything about him. There is a scene at the beginning of the book where she accidentally backs into his car in the parking lot and this is never mentioned ever again. Did she get her car fixed? Did he? We will never know.
There are some things I liked about this book:
- I loved the setting. The book takes place in Gig Harbor, WA and since I also live in the Pacific Northwest, I love reading about anything that takes place in my area.
- I actually really liked the character of Josie. She was a mean curmudgeon but I liked her. She was the only person with any personality in the book.
- I also really liked the book club. The ladies read a lot of self-help books and I liked how they were incorporated in the book.
This wasn’t for me but that is just my opinion!
