In the far future, scientists have discovered alternate universes and have developed a way to travel between worlds. The only catch is that you cannot travel to an alternate universe if your counterpart in that universe is alive. Luckily Cara is good at dying – she has died in 372 worlds which makes her a valuable traveller between universes. But then she travels to a world where one of her counterparts has died under mysterious circumstances and Cara discovers a secret that could change everything.
I finally checked this book out from the library and I’m glad I did – I was instantly hooked. I was super excited to finally be interested in a book after DNFing the last two books I started. Science fiction is a genre that I am always surprised I like so much. Then again, I love reading about things that haven’t happened or could happen in the future. I love anything that takes place in space, with far-off planets, and this book kind of has that feel with Cara exploring new worlds.
I liked a lot of things about this book. I really liked the concept that you and your counterpart can’t occupy the same space in the same world. This just makes sense to me and I liked that it was a main component of this book. The book raises some interesting questions about how nature and circumstances can change someone’s life. How much of your life is based on fate or because you went left at the fork in the road instead of right? Would you find yourself surrounded by the same people in each life? Are people naturally drawn to the same people in each world?
I liked that the book didn’t try to bog you down with science and explanations about how the multiverse travel works. I also liked that, even in the future, there is still some mystical elements at play and I liked all the nods to religion.
I also felt like there were some things left unexplained or unexplored. I thought the villain could have used more elaboration. I didn’t find the nefarious plot to be very significant, especially because it didn’t seem to affect Cara directly. I also didn’t quite understand what the point was in going to the other universes. Cara just seems to gather intelligence downloads from ports that have been placed around the cities, but what are the downloads of? I think we later find out that they are also possibly harvesting metal and elements from the other worlds, but it’s not really explained how these elements and metal are moved between the universes (I could be wrong here).
All in all, I liked this book and I’m glad it was able to drag me out of my book slump.
