Jack Colclough and his family are hurrying to pack their car to leave town. A couple of days ago, people started going crazy and murdering anyone they saw. The power’s gone out, and now the names of people to be killed are being read aloud on the Emergency Broadcast System. Jack hears his name called out and he knows that he and his family need to leave before they are killed in their home. Their only hope is to get out first and find a way to survive.
The first half of this book was so suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat reading and wondering what was going to happen to this family. Reading about them traveling, driving through burnt-out cities, and hiding at night was nail-biting. I found the descriptions of the roadblocks and convoys, and people literally chasing down other people in order to kill them, to be terrifying.
This is the fourth book by Blake Crouch that I’ve read, and I’ve liked them all. I did think that this book was a little different than the other books I’ve read. I’ve read Dark Matter, Recursion, and Upgrade, and I found those books to be more science fiction-heavy. Run did not have that science fiction feel to me that the other books had. I believe this novel is one of Blake Crouch’s early books and has been rereleased with a new cover, so it has a bit of a different feel than his later works.
I questioned a lot of the decisions made by the family, like when they decided to literally climb up a mountain. Was there really nowhere else to go?. I also felt like the ending was really abrupt, and there was no real explanation as to why people started killing other people or why specific people were targeted and called out on the radio. I honestly thought that the names being called out on the radio was going to be a bigger plot point and we were going to find out that they wanted to kill all of the intellectual crowd, but it’s never mentioned again in the book.
This book is all action, and if you are looking for a suspenseful action thriller, this book delivers. Just be prepared to suspend your disbelief at more than one scene in the book.
