Halley Zwick is on the run and needs to hide out somewhere no one will find her. She takes an under-the-table job on board the Elysian Fields, a spaceship carrying hundreds of cryogenically frozen bodies. When the technology to unfreeze the people didn’t work, the ship was turned into a morbid, orbiting museum that was ultimately abandoned. Halley is hired to make sure everything is still working on this floating morge and nothing is amiss. She thinks it’s the perfect job until she realizes the spaceship may not be abandoned as she thinks.
This is the third book I’ve read by this author and I am loving this space horror genre. It’s not a genre I thought I would like (since I don’t like scary movies), but I am into it. Unfortunately, while I liked this book, I didn’t love it as much as the author’s other books. I’m not sure if it is because Halley is basically the only character we interact with and the author’s other books had more of an ensemble cast, or because I just wanted more from the book.
The author does a great job of creating an eerie atmosphere on board the spaceship with lots of unsettling moments. There are weird noises all around and strange markings on the floor. And there are also all the frozen people. The thought of being on board a spaceship filled with hundreds of frozen people would creep anyone out.
The first half of this book was great. However, the second half, and once you find out what is happening on board, was a bit of a let-down. The book seemed to be rushed and ended really quickly. I guess I was hoping for more action or confrontation scenes. I hardly ever say this, but I wish the book were longer and that the ending had more substance to it.
Additionally, the book went in a direction I definitely was not expecting. I thought I knew what was going on but then the author threw in a paranormal effect and it completely threw me. It was a bit disappointing because I was expecting something else and it was a bit anticlimactic.
This book was creepy and spooky and I liked it. I just had to make sure I was reading during the day.
