Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is Books with a High Page Count. I don’t really love that topic, so I’m going to make one of my own and talk about bookish opinions. I’ve talked about bookish confessions and book pet peeves in the past, but I have more!
Here are 10 more bookish opinions:
1. You get one trope to describe your book. Don’t tell me that your book is small town, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, second chance, and runaway bride. You get one trope – pick one.
2. I don’t care about special editions. Just let me read my book with its original cover!
3. I don’t like sprayed edges on books. I don’t display the edges of books when they’re on my bookshelf, so I really don’t see the point of decorated edges. No one sees them.
4. I still hate illustrated book covers. They look like children’s books. If I wanted to read a children’s book, I would pick that up. When will they end??
5. Ebooks should never cost more than a physical book.
6. Books on my bookshelf are organized by author. Well, they are divided between fiction and non-fiction, and then alphabetically by author. How else am I supposed to find anything?
7. It’s ok if you don’t remember every single thing you’ve read. Not everything is meant to be remembered.
8. I hate pop culture references in books. I don’t want to read about characters discussing which Hogwarts house they’d be in or hear about a Taylor Swift reference. This completely takes me out of the book.
9. Not all romance novels need to be spicy. There are some really amazing romance books out there that are closed-door.
10. Similarly, I hate the phrase “good girl,” and if a man ever said that to me, I would show him the door.

I agree with all of these!
I do like seeing maps in books if needed (e.g. if it’s about history or a fantasy book about some complex imaginary place), but illustrations aren’t necessary.
I love it when there is a map! Every time the characters go to a new place I will always flip back to the map to see where it is.
I have noticed a trend with authors trying to embrace ALL the tropes in one book. That’s annoying, I totally agree.

Great post! I think you won’t like my current read then because one of the main characters is throwing SO many pop culture references out there that even I think this is too much. Doesn’t make the book timeless and might be annoying for people who aren’t familiar to that certain element in pop culture. It might throw them off.

Sometimes the pop culture references work! But I agree, too many is too much.
