Dolores dela Cruz, lover of all things true crime, is convinced the new office temp, Jacob Ripper, is a serial killer. Which is actually a good thing, considering she needs help disposing of a body.
This book was dark, funny, and completely unexpected. I wasn’t prepared for the morbid humor or the emotional roller coaster it ended up taking me on. The story never takes itself too seriously, and it turned out to be nothing like I expected in the best way.
The dynamic between Dolores and Jake, full of playful banter, suspicion, and curiosity, kept me hooked the entire time. I never quite knew whether either of them was actually a serial killer, a psychopath, or just deeply obsessed with true crime. Even while the suspense kept building, I found myself laughing at their antics more than once.
The first part of the book is quirky, chaotic, and honestly a little weird, and for a while I had absolutely no idea where the story was heading. But as we learn more about Dolores and Jake, the story becomes much more emotional. Their vulnerability slowly starts to show, and we realize the dark humor is masking something much deeper and more serious.
The secondary characters added so much charm to the story and were oddly endearing in their own ways. Every character felt purposeful and brought something entertaining or meaningful to the plot.
I came into this expecting a quirky thriller and left surprisingly attached to these wonderfully messy characters.
