For some reason, I keep reading self-help books thinking I will learn some new nugget of knowledge. I pick up a book and think, surely this person has some wise words of wisdom that I haven’t heard before. But sadly, it never seems to be.
From what I gathered from this book, the author is a famous blogger and/or her husband is famous. I’m not sure. I have no clue who Rachel Hollis is – I’ve never heard of her before. I picked this book up because I kept seeing it all over the bookstore and I liked the title and was interested to see what it said.
Girl, Wash Your Face was a good book but I personally didn’t learn anything new or have any epiphanies. This book seemed to have the same advice I’ve read in so many other books – be yourself, it doesn’t matter what people think, only you can change yourself, if you want to accomplish something you need to get out there and do it. I didn’t find anything unique or different about this book.
The book is filled with stories about the author’s life so if you want to learn more about her, you should read this book. Although, since I’ve never read her blog and know nothing about her, I cannot tell you if the stories in the book are new or stories she’s already told. Some of the stories were very honest, like when she talks about her struggles with Bell’s Palsy. Some of the stories just seemed to be bragging about her fabulous life and buying a $1,000 purse.
I found some parts of the book to be a little tedious (for example, buying a $1,000 purse). There were also times when the advice offered felt a little preachy and moral. I gathered from the text that Rachel Hollis is religious. As someone who is not religious and who does not go to church, I tended to skim those parts that discussed her faith.
The book was well-written and interesting. Like I said, I found most of the advice to be common-sense so it really didn’t do much for me.
