When missing child Tanner Holcomb is found alive miles from home on a remote hiking trail, his rescuer Johnny Bradley is thrust into the spotlight. Celebrated as a hero, Johnny’s life changes overnight. But not everyone is excited to suddenly be in the public eye. Johnny’s wife Veronica worries that hidden secrets will come to light and hopes that eventually, the frenzy will die down. However, when it turns out that Johnny may have been involved in more than just finding Tanner, Veronica starts to wonder just who in her life she can trust.
I wanted to like this book so much because I am a big fan of Victoria Helen Stone (who is the nom de plume for author Victoria Dahl). Unfortunately, I didn’t like this one as much as I hoped.
I didn’t like any of the main characters. I thought both Johnny and Veronica were horrible people. I didn’t understand any of Veronica’s motives for just about everything that she did and I found her to be incredibly selfish and immature. I couldn’t figure out if Johnny was ambitious or a gullible victim.
There were too many times when I just had to wonder what Veronica was thinking. I would have liked this book so much more if I wasn’t cringing every time she said or did something. The only person I felt any bit of sympathy for was Sydney, the couple’s daughter.
If you want to read a good Victoria Helen Stone novel, I would suggest you read Jane Doe and skip this one.
