Aurora Blazing is book #2 in the Consortium Rebellion series. The first book, Polaris Rising, follows Ada von Hasenberg who is fleeing from an arranged marriage and joins forces with a dangerous fugitive. Did I mention it takes place in space? Read my review of Polaris Rising here.
Aurora Blazing is about Ada’s sister Bianca.
Bianca von Hasenberg has returned to her family after the death of her husband. Bianca’s not too upset; she didn’t really like her husband and only married him because it was her family duty. Vowing to never marry again, she can now focus her time on things she enjoys, such as espionage and collecting information. When her family is attacked and her brother, the heir to House von Hasenberg, goes missing, Bianca sets off across the universe to find him. Unfortunately, her father has tasked the head of security Ian Bishop to bring Bianca home.
Just like Polaris Rising, this book got me hooked and I could not put it down. I really like reading about badass women who are competent and who know what they are doing. Bianca has a unique skill set that took me a bit to figure out, but once I did I thought it was super interesting. She has a lot of secrets and I felt that a large part of the book dealt with her figuring out who she could tell her secrets to, as well as healing from the damage that her dead husband did to her.
We do get to meet up with Ada and Loch from the first book which I liked. I enjoyed dropping in on them to see more of them together and to see how they are doing. If there was one thing this book could have used more of, it’s more Ada and Loch.
There’s not as much action in this book as in Polaris Rising. A lot of the book is focused on intelligence gathering and spying. We get a glimpse of the virtual reality world that exists and more of what life is like on this future Earth. Most of the action takes place in the second half of the book when Bianca and Ian figure out where her brother is and work together to rescue him.
I’m really enjoying the world-building in this series. There’s not really anything new – it takes place in the future, there’s virtual reality, driverless transports, spaceships that can jump lightyears, replicators, all that future stuff. But I really like the characters and their situations and just everything.
This book is a romance between Bianca and Ian. In my opinion, the romance wasn’t the forefront of the plot, but it was definitely there, simmering, in the background. Although there is a happily ever after, this book focuses very much on Bianca and the adventure.
