Dan and Laurie have been dating for 18 years so it comes as a surprise to Laurie when Dan breaks up with her. The worst part is that she still has to see him every day considering that they work together. But when Laurie gets stuck in an elevator with the office hottie Jamie Carter, the two strike up an unlikely friendship. Then Jaime comes up with a proposition – since Laurie wants to make Dan jealous and Jamie needs the bosses to see him as a respectable guy, he proposes they stage a fake romance.
I’ve been disappointed in the last couple of books I’ve read by Mhairi McFarlane. Honestly, I had decided that maybe I would stop reading her books however, I forgot that I had put this book on hold at the library. When I got an email telling me it was available to check out I decided I would give the author another shot.
I’m glad I did.
I really liked this book and I laid in bed one morning over the weekend just reading it.
Was it predictable? Yup. Did I care? Nope.
I am a sucker for a fake relationship. I love this trope. And I really liked the way it played out in this book. Jamie needs a steady girlfriend to impress the bosses at work. Laurie just wants to make Dan jealous. With a couple of photos and social media posts, the two are able to pull it off.
But what I liked most about this book is that it is about Laurie finding herself along the way and discovering who she is. She’s an older heroine, in her 30s (gasp!), whose life has just been turned upside down and now she has figure everything out. I thought she was funny and relatable.
The secondary characters in this book are also great. I liked Laurie’s friendship with her co-worker Bharat. Laurie’s friends Emily and Nadia were the best and I really enjoyed the scenes with Laurie and her mom.
There are a lot of pop culture references in this book. A lot of movies, actors, and songs are name-dropped. There were also a number of references to Harry Potter. Do people really talk like that, just announcing in casual conversation that someone is a Slytherin? No one I know talks like that but maybe I’m old.
I really liked this book and I’m glad I checked it out from the library.
