Jules can’t believe her luck when she is offered a job apartment sitting at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most prestigious residences. She will get paid $1,000 per week to live in this coveted building. But not everything is as wonderful as it seems as there are a few rules Jules has to follow – she can’t have any visitors, she can’t disturb any of the other residents, and she can’t spend any nights away from the apartment. Jules desperately needs the money so she takes the job and ends up befriending another apartment sitter, Ingrid. But when Ingrid goes missing Jules starts investigating and finds out that the Bartholomew has a dark past and may be hiding an even bigger secret.
I really liked this book. This is a thriller, a mystery, and it held me in suspense until the end. The format of the book is a countdown so we know we are counting down the days until something happens but we don’t know what it is that happens. I thought it was a great way to build tension and anxiety.
The main character is Jules. At first, I didn’t really like Jules. I thought she was kind of annoying and I couldn’t understand why she was so focused on finding Ingrid, a girl she had met once or twice. But then we learn more about Jules’s backstory, which is that her sister disappeared when Jules was in high school and she was never found. So Jules is kind of always looking for her sister which I think was used as a way to explain why Jules couldn’t stop looking for Ingrid. But without this background, I would have really questioned what Jules was up to.
There’s not a lot to say about the plot without giving anything away. I will say that I thought the book was heading in one direction and then it took a turn and went in a completely other direction that I was not expecting. I do have some doubts about the plausibility of the ending but I could put that aside because I really enjoyed the story and getting there.
I’m very glad that past me put this book on hold at the library so I was able to read it.
