January Edwards is a romance writer with writer’s block. Ever since her dad died and she found out he had a whole other life, January hasn’t been able to believe in happily ever after. With her book deadline looming, January goes to the beach house her father left her, the house she didn’t know existed. There, she is confronted with her rude neighbor Gus Everett, who turns out to be the same Gus Everett who was her college writing rival and who is now a serious literary writer. He also has writer’s block. As the two start to spend time with each other, they make a bet – January will write a literary fiction novel and Gus will write a book that ends in happily ever after, and whoever sells their manuscript first, wins.
I liked this book. It was a cute romance. I thought it would be light and breezy but there’s actually a lot of substance and some serious plotlines about family drama and loneliness.
January and Gus may be rivals but they get past that pretty quick and their relationship turns into a teasing and banter-filled one. I really enjoyed their conversations and I was rooting for them. They were both real and both underwent a lot of character development over the course of the book.
Okay, look. People LOVE this book. I liked it but did I love it? Who knows. I kept falling asleep when I was trying to read and I don’t know if it was because I was just really tired or because parts of the book weren’t doing anything for me. I liked it, I think it’s a good book, I would recommend it, but is it bad for me to say that I thought some parts were just meh?
Can we also talk about the title of this book? It’s called Beach Read and on the cover are two people in bathing suits lying on towels. The thing is, although this book takes place at the beach, the characters in this book never go to the beach. Well, they go to the beach at night and sit in the sand but they never go during the day and we never see this scene on the cover. I guess this book could be called Beach Read because it’s trying to evoke that summer, going on vacation, reading a page-turning book vibe? I don’t know.
This was a good book although I still can’t figure out why it’s called Beach Read.
