When she is mistaken for a contract killer while talking to her editor at Panera, struggling author Finlay Donovan wonders if she can kill a stranger’s husband for $50,000. The money would go a long way in hiring an attorney to fight her ex-husband for custody of her children. Hijinks ensue when the man Finlay is “hired” to kill winds up dead anyway. Now Finlay and her nanny are trying to hide a body and stay one step ahead of the mob while pretending nothing is wrong with the handsome detective who is investigating the dead man’s disappearance.
I found this book to be very funny and I can totally see it as a movie. While I thought some of the things that Finlay and her nanny Vero get up to were a bit crazy, I had fun laughing at their antics. This book is fast-paced and a bit outrageous. There’s also a mystery aspect as Finlay and Vero are trying to figure out who actually killed the man Finlay was hired to kill.
That being said, one of the things that I couldn’t get past is that Finlay is a bit of a mess. Her house is a mess, her kids are out of control, and she hasn’t written anything in three months (there is even a mention of her office having a layer of dust over it because she hasn’t been in it in a while). She lets her mail pile up on the front porch because she can’t pay her bills. Finlay doesn’t have a 9-5 job – writing is her job – so what has she been doing all day if she’s not writing. She seems to not be able to function without her nanny Vero and I’m just thinking, why? She desperately needs money because she can’t pay her bills and her electricity got turned off, but she’s not writing and doing her job to make that money? And then we are supposed to believe that all of a sudden she has two hot guys that want to date her? It just did not make sense to me.
I did feel for Finlay though. Her ex-husband and his girlfriend keep threatening to sue for full custody of her kids for no reason other than spite. Her ex-husband would belittle her writing and make sarcastic comments, like asking if the royalty money she earned would be enough to buy diapers that month. Although I questioned the likelihood of the two guys chasing her, I was glad that it seemed Finlay finally had someone that wanted her.
The ending of this book sets up the sequel and I am on board to read what happens next.
