Nine years ago, Rhys Penhallow broke Vivianne Jones’s heart and in a fit of fury, Vivi and her cousin cursed him. Of course, it didn’t count since they only had an “orchid hayride” scented candle on hand. But now Rhys is back in town to recharge the town’s ley lines and Vivi realizes the curse she jokingly put on Rhys is very much real.
I wanted to read something spooky and witchy to get in the Halloween mood and The Ex Hex did the trick. It’s a fairly light read about a second chance romance and I thought the book was a lot of fun. It has witches, magic, humor, fall festivals, a talking cat, and toy skulls running amok.
The characters are funny and I loved the banter between Vivi and Rhys. I for sure had some laugh-out-loud moments. There are some great secondary characters in the form of Vivi’s cousin and aunt that reminded me of some of the characters from Practical Magic. The town that they live in had a very small town witchy feel with witches living in secret next to non-witches. I was here for all of the magical representations in the book.
I do wish that we had learned more about the backstory of Vivi and Rhys. They definitely have a lot of chemistry but a lot of it seemed to be based on physical attraction. While I did buy into the second chance romance that these lovers are coming back together, I also kept wondering why they got together in the first place. Why do they like each other? We get a little explanation that they met when Vivi was 19 and it was kind of love at first sight followed by a whirlwind romance but that’s it. I would have liked to learn more about what it is that these two people like about each other, other than their looks.
I am hoping there will be a sequel, maybe with Rhys’s brothers. I just feel that there was so much more that we haven’t seen.
