After the death of her husband, Carly Hale moves back to her hometown and fulfills her lifelong dream of opening up a grilled cheese restaurant. Things are looking up for Carly until she receives notice that her new landlord is not going to renew her restaurant lease. But then her landlord is discovered dead behind the dumpster of Carly’s restaurant and one of her employees becomes the prime suspect. In order to save her employee and her restaurant, Carly sets out to figure out who the real killer is.
I saw someone mention this book on Twitter and my first thought was “A cozy mystery + cheese? Where can I read this?” And then I read the synopsis and learned the main character owns a grilled cheese restaurant and I was 100% in.
I liked this book. It was such a cozy mystery and I was in complete shock as to who the murderer was – the person was not even in my mind of suspects. There is a tiny smidge of romance which was fine; I could have taken or left it. I don’t need romance in all my books and the romance here was definitely not the main, second, or even third storyline.
I thought the characters were interesting and compelling. Everyone has their own backstory and I would definitely read more about this cute little town. There is a second book coming up soon so I can’t wait to see what happens next. I hope some of the characters in this book make an appearance in the next one. I would love to learn more about Carly’s employees Suzanne and Grant, as well as Becca, a homeless veteran.
Carly is an amateur sleuth and I was a little irritated at how much she was getting involved in the investigation but I guess that’s how these books go. At least Carly didn’t do anything too outrageous or unbelievable. I mean, you have to love a character whose known since she was a teenager that she wanted to own and run a grilled cheese restaurant. It’s probably not wise to read this book on an empty stomach because all of the grilled cheese concoctions Carly makes sound so yummy!
I mean, how fun would it be to own a grilled cheese restaurant? Side thought – there really needs to be a grilled cheese restaurant in my area. Someone needs to get on that. I would go there probably every other day if there was one.
