Claire Kovalik leads a motley beacon repair crew. When their spaceship picks up a strange distress signal, they decide to investigate and end up finding the Aurora – a luxury spaceliner that vanished on its maiden voyage of the solar system more than twenty years ago. The salvage claim for the Aurora could set Claire and her crew up for life but when they board the Aurora it quickly becomes apparent that something terrible happened on board and what affected the original passengers and crew could also have attached itself to Claire and her crew.
This book was super spooky and creepy and was definitely one where I thought, “Do I want to read this at night?” It is marketed as Titanic meets The Shining and while that is a very apt description, I was also reminded of the movie Event Horizon, with a spaceship sort of appearing out of nowhere and a catastrophe that has affected everyone on board.
The visual imagery in this book was fabulous. I loved that the Aurora was described as basically looking like an ocean liner. Can you imagine the Titanic in space? With the opulence that was described on board, I could picture everything in my head from the grand staircases to the dining rooms and the swimming pool.
The mystery of the story revolves around what happened to everyone onboard the Aurora. Claire and her crew witness a lot of eerie things after boarding the ship – they are hearing and seeing things that should not be possible, not to mention words written in blood on the walls. Being on the ship definitely invokes feelings of claustrophobia, not to mention the fact that everyone seems to have died a horrible death.
We know from the beginning that Claire is an unreliable narrator but I still enjoyed her character. I thought she was scrappy and persistent when she needed to be and I was rooting for her the entire book.
I thought this was a good ghost story.
